Derive the lateral actions on a building in one place. Set the importance level and design life, the building geometry and floor weights; the studio works through AS/NZS 1170.2 site wind speed (region, terrain, shielding, topography), external and internal pressure coefficients, roof and wall pressures with local-pressure zones, and storey wind forces — then AS 1170.4 hazard, site class, period, spectral shape, earthquake design category and the equivalent static base shear distributed up the height. Compare wind and earthquake, send the governing storey forces to the 3D Frame Studio, and issue calculation sheets and Excel.
Scope & limitations
Preliminary actions for study and feasibility. Simplified coefficients for enclosed rectangular buildings — confirm with the full standards and have the design checked by a qualified structural engineer.
What the Wind & Earthquake Loads Studio does
The design basis sets the importance level and design working life, which fix the annual probabilities of exceedance for wind and earthquake to AS/NZS 1170.0. The building is a rectangular block with a flat or gable roof and a table of floor levels with their permanent and imposed loads.
Wind follows AS/NZS 1170.2:2021: the regional speed for the return period, climate change and direction multipliers, terrain-height, shielding and topographic multipliers, the site and design speeds, then external pressure coefficients for walls and roofs with area reduction, internal pressure cases, local-pressure zones and net design pressures, and the storey forces and base shear in both directions.
Earthquake follows AS 1170.4: the hazard factor for the location, probability factor, site sub-soil class, the natural period, the spectral shape factor and structural ductility and performance factors, the earthquake design category, and the equivalent static base shear distributed up the height with storey shears and drift limits.
The summary compares wind and earthquake for each direction and sends the governing storey forces to the 3D Frame Studio as load cases. Output: PDF calculation sheets and an Excel workbook.
