Design a road pavement from traffic to the drawing. Enter the traffic and its axle loads, the subgrade test results and the materials; the studio analyses flexible, full-depth asphalt, sealed granular and concrete pavements by the chosen code's mechanistic and empirical methods and by AASHTO 1993, sizes the design layer automatically (or drag it on the section), checks rigid slabs and joints, designs overlays from deflection and compares the life-cycle cost — with an A3 drawing set, Excel workbook and report.
Scope & limitations
For preliminary design and education. Transfer functions, presets and material values follow published practice in simplified form; a project design must use the road authority's current guide, project traffic and tested materials, and be checked by a pavement engineer.
What the pavement design studio does
Traffic: design lane AADT, heavy-vehicle share, growth and design life give the cumulative heavy vehicles; an editable axle-load spectrum converts them to equivalent standard axles (fourth-power law) and to the asphalt, granular and cemented damage measures SAR5, SAR7 and SAR12, with the code's lane and direction factors.
Subgrade: the design CBR is the 10th-percentile of your test results (or a single value), giving the modulus and the modulus of subgrade reaction; drag the design layer on the to-scale section to change its thickness.
Flexible pavements: the empirical granular chart, a mechanistic layered-elastic analysis (Odemark equivalent thickness with exact Boussinesq integration for a dual wheel) with asphalt fatigue, subgrade rutting and cemented fatigue transfer functions, and the AASHTO 1993 structural-number design — with automatic thickness of the design layer.
Concrete pavements: AASHTO 1993 slab thickness, Westergaard edge and interior stresses on the modulus of subgrade reaction, fatigue damage, joint spacing, dowels and tie bars; overlays by the AASHTO deflection (NDT) method.
Outputs: quantities and life-cycle cost, construction sequence with hold points, an A3 drawing set and an Excel workbook with live traffic, transfer-function, AASHTO and Westergaard formulas.
